High-resolution micro-CT as a tool for 3D surface roughness measurement of 3D additive manufactured porous structures

چکیده
Since commercially available profiling systems fail when determining the surface roughness of 3D additive manufactured porous structures, a novel protocol for surface roughness quantification of these porous structures has been developed based on high-resolution micro-CT images. The influence of the noise in the images and the spatial image resolution on the accuracy of the micro-CT-based roughness measurements has been investigated by comparing the roughness parameters of 2D flat substrates determined both with commercially available (optical and contact) profiling systems and the microCT-based roughness measurement protocol. This comparison showed that micro-CT can be applied accurately and in a robust manner for surface roughness quantification of 3D additive manufactured porous materials, but that depending on the dimensions of the roughness, the micro-CT acquisition parameters need to be fine-tuned.

Despite advancements in specifying 3D internal microstructure of reservoir rocks, identifying some sensitive phenomenons are still problematic particularly due to image resolution limitation. Discretization study on such CT-scan data always has encountered with such conflicts that the original data do not fully describe the real porous media. As an alternative attractive approach, one can recon...

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a production method that enables the building of porous structures with a controlled geometry. However, there is a limited control over the final surface of the product. Hence, complementary surface engineering strategies are needed. In this work, design of experiments (DoE) was used to customize post AM surface treatment for 3D selective laser melted Ti6Al4V open...

متن کاملHigh resolution micro ultrasonic machining for trimming 3D microstructures
This paper reports on the evaluation of a high resolution micro ultrasonic machining (HR-μUSM) process suitable for post fabrication trimming of complex 3D microstructures made from fused silica. Unlike conventional USM, the HR-μUSM process aims for low machining rates, providing high resolution and high surface quality. The machining rate is reduced by keeping the micro-tool tip at a fixed dis...
